The Inspiration for Leo’s Iowa Naturals is this spectacularly handsome Great Pyrenees, American Staffordshire, and Border Collie mix. Beloved by an ever-growing circle of family and friends, Leo’s ninth birthday set off an alarm. Typical longevity of 11 or 12 years was simply not acceptable. Leo was in his prime and needed to stay that way.
That was the end for Leo of ultra heat processed, factory made kibble that was loaded with preservatives for long-term shelf stability, plus a sad mix of synthetic ingredients that ranged from iffy to truly toxic.
And it was the start of a new journey toward real food from local Iowa farms — gently cooked, complete, balanced, and delicious.
Expecting affirmation from my vet for my devotion to this handsome boy’s well being, I was urged to proceed with caution.
Truth is: dog nutrition is complicated
The likes of choline, copper, calcium, vitamin C – fully 14 vitamins and 13 minerals – are essential and the results can be dire when any are lacking or the right balance is off.

Inspired by the principles of The Forever Dog, we consumed a library of literature and resources on canine wellness.
We consulted with the faculty at Iowa State University’s School of Veterinary Medicine.
We invested in the Animal Diet Formulator software, which carefully calibrates canine nutritional requirements down to every minute vitamin and mineral.
And Leo’s Iowa Naturals, LLC was born.
